There is a version of Chelsea’s history that can be told entirely through the backs of shirts. The 25 that a small Sardinian made into the most loved number at the club. The 8 that scored 211 goals from midfield. The 11 that headed in the equaliser in Munich. The 26 that a captain wore for nineteen seasons. The 10 that a Mancunian took over in 2025 and is now expected to carry a new era. This is a guide to the numbers on the Chelsea kit, the players who defined them and the moment the club finds itself in as Xabi Alonso’s first season begins.
From positions to possessions
Before 1993 numbers described positions. Peter Osgood was the 9 because he was the centre-forward; Ron Harris was the 6 because he played at the back. The Premier League’s introduction of squad numbers changed that, and Chelsea, under Glenn Hoddle and then Ruud Gullit, were among the first clubs to treat a number as part of a player’s identity. Gullit wore 4 as a sweeper-cum-midfielder, Gianluca Vialli took 9, Dennis Wise kept 11, and a new signing from Parma asked for a number nobody had thought of.
25: Zola
Gianfranco Zola wore 25 because it was what he had worn in Italy, and by the time he left in 2003 the number was his so completely that the club left it unworn for twenty years. The 1997 FA Cup, the 1998 Cup Winners’ Cup winner in Stockholm and seven seasons of free-kicks were all in it. Moisés Caicedo asked for it in 2023, and is the first since Zola to have made it his own.
8: Lampard
Frank Lampard arrived from West Ham in 2001 and wore 8 for thirteen seasons, scoring 211 goals, the club record, from midfield. Three league titles under José Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, four FA Cups and the 2012 Champions League all came in it. The number passed briefly to Oscar and then to Ross Barkley and Mateo Kovačić before Enzo Fernández inherited it in 2023, and the Argentine has worn it through the 2025 Club World Cup win and the 2026 World Cup final.
11 and 26: Drogba and Terry
Didier Drogba wore 15 in his first season and 11 from 2005, and the 11 is the shirt of the 2012 Champions League final: the 88th-minute header against Bayern Munich and the winning penalty. John Terry wore 26 from his debut in 1998 until his final match in 2017, lifting five league titles as captain in it, and the number has since been treated as unofficially retired, with no first-team regular wearing it in the years since.
The 9 and its curse
Chelsea’s 9 is the most discussed number in English football for the wrong reasons. Vialli and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink wore it well, but since the 2000s it has been worn by Fernando Torres, Radamel Falcao, Álvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuaín and Romelu Lukaku, each of whom arrived for a large fee and left having disappointed. The “curse of the 9” is a joke with a statistical basis, and the club’s recent forwards have shown a marked preference for other numbers.
10: from Hazard to Palmer
Eden Hazard wore 17 and then 10, and his six seasons in the second of those produced two league titles and the goal against Arsenal in the 2019 Europa League final. The number was worn without distinction for several years afterwards until Cole Palmer, who had arrived from Manchester City wearing 20, switched to 10 in the summer of 2025. Palmer’s two goals in the 2025 Club World Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain came in the 20; the 10 is the shirt of the new era, and the one most often seen in the stands at Stamford Bridge.
The 2025/26 season and the new manager
That new era did not begin smoothly. Chelsea dismissed Enzo Maresca during the 2025/26 season, replaced him with Liam Rosenior, dismissed Rosenior in April after seven defeats in eight matches, finished ninth and lost the FA Cup final 1-0 to Manchester City. The day after that final the club appointed Xabi Alonso on a four-year contract, the former Liverpool midfielder who won the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen and had left Real Madrid earlier in the year. He began work on 1 July with a squad full of expensive young players and no European football to distract them.
The kit for the Alonso era
Nike’s 2026/27 home shirt is built around the crest, refreshed after consultation with supporters and woven into the fabric as a tonal pattern across the body. The collar is a button-down polo, the accents are a gold shade Nike calls Midwest Gold, and the shirt marks the 75th season since Ted Drake introduced the lion. It carries the gold Club World Cup winners’ badge, which the club applied to keep until the next tournament. At £89.99 it is the second most expensive replica in the Premier League, a penny behind Tottenham. The shirt is built on the new Nike template introduced for the 2026 World Cup.
The 4 and the 7
Two other numbers deserve a mention. The 4 has been worn by Ruud Gullit, Claude Makélélé, whose name became a position, and Cesc Fàbregas, three midfielders who changed how the team played. The 7 was N’Golo Kanté’s for seven seasons, and his performance in the 2021 Champions League final in Porto is the best any Chelsea player has given in the shirt. Both numbers have been reassigned since and neither has yet found a permanent owner.
The goalkeepers
Petr Cech wore the 1 from 2004 to 2015 and kept a record number of clean sheets in it, the helmet he wore after his skull fracture in 2006 becoming as recognisable as the shirt. Thibaut Courtois chose 13 and was Chelsea’s keeper for the 2015 and 2017 titles. Robert Sánchez has worn the 1 since 2023, and the number, like the 9, has spent the last decade attached to more debate than the club would like.
What the numbers say about the club
Chelsea’s numbers tell a story of two decades in which the club bought players faster than it could build them a legacy. The great numbers, 25, 8, 11, 26, belong to men who stayed for a decade or more. The problem numbers, above all the 9, belong to men who came and went. The current squad’s numbers are mostly held by players in their early twenties on long contracts, which is either the foundation of a new set of legends or another cycle of custodians. Alonso’s job is to make it the former. For the latest player news and analysis, visit our homepage.
