English football club names look like a random vocabulary until you learn where they came from, at which point they turn into one of the better historical records the game has. Almost every suffix means something specific, and most of them record how and where the club was founded.
The names were set in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when clubs were forming out of churches, factories, cricket teams and pubs, and the conventions of that period have been preserved almost intact ever since.
United, City and Town
“United” almost always records a merger or an amalgamation. Two clubs in the same town joined, or a single club reformed by combining with another, and the new entity announced the fact in its name. Several clubs that now carry it were formed out of works teams or earlier clubs with entirely different names.
“City” and “Town” are civic rather than historical. A club named City is generally based in a place with city status, and a club named Town in a market town, and both were adopted to signal that the club represented the whole place rather than a district or a workplace. That mattered a great deal at the time, because the alternative was being seen as one of several neighbourhood sides.
The civic names also tell you something about timing. A club founded as a works team and later renamed for its city was making a deliberate claim to represent a wider public, usually in the course of turning professional.
Rovers, Wanderers and Athletic
“Rovers” and “Wanderers” both record the same original circumstance: a club with no ground of its own. Early clubs frequently had no fixed home and played wherever a pitch could be arranged, and a name announcing that was simply descriptive. Many of those clubs acquired permanent grounds within a few years and kept the name.
“Athletic” is slightly different. It usually indicates that the club was founded as, or grew out of, a general athletic club covering several sports rather than football alone. Cricket, athletics and cycling clubs all produced football sections in this period, and some of them kept the parent organisation’s name.
“Albion” is a poetic name for Britain, and its use was fashionable at the time for the same reason “Rovers” was — it sounded right. In at least one well-known case it also referenced a specific local district, which is the usual pattern: a name chosen because it was both available and meaningful locally.
Which club names are the strangest?
Some names record something far more specific. Sheffield Wednesday takes its name from a cricket club that played on Wednesdays, which was the half-day holiday for the local trades, and which formed a football section to keep its members together through the winter. It is one of the clearest surviving records of the Victorian working week anywhere in British life.
Tottenham Hotspur is named after Harry Hotspur of the Percy family, whose connection to the area gave a group of schoolboy founders a suitably heroic name. Arsenal was founded by workers at a munitions factory, which is where the cannon on the badge comes from. Nottingham Forest took its name from the ground it first played on.
Several clubs are named for the religious institutions that founded them. Church and chapel teams were an enormous force in the formation of English football, set up to give young men something to do, and the names of a number of current professional clubs trace directly back to a specific congregation.
Nicknames are a separate layer
It is worth separating the formal name from the nickname, because they come from different places and work differently. A formal name was chosen by the founders and registered; a nickname was almost always given by supporters, journalists or opposing crowds, and nobody chose it deliberately.
That is why nicknames are so much more varied and so much less tidy. Some come from the colours, some from a local industry, some from an animal on the badge, some from the shape of a ground, and a few from incidents nobody can now reconstruct. They also change: a club can acquire a new nickname within a few seasons if something memorable happens, while its registered name is fixed.
The two layers together are how a club’s identity actually works — a formal name recording how it was founded, and an informal one recording how it has been seen since.
Why have the names not changed?
Because the names are the one asset a club cannot replace, and supporters have consistently defended them. Attempts to change a club’s name, relocate it, or rebrand it have met sustained and usually successful opposition, and the few that have succeeded are remembered as cautionary tales.
There is also a regulatory element. Club names are registered with the governing bodies and any change requires approval, which gives supporters a formal point of objection rather than only a moral one. The Football Association holds the registration framework that clubs operate within, and the rules around names and identity sit inside it.
The result is a league full of names that would make no sense to anyone inventing a competition today, and which are collectively one of the more valuable things about English football. A badge can be redesigned and a kit supplier can be changed, but a name carries the founding circumstances of the club permanently, which is why the story of the club crest tends to be a story of change while the name stays put.
One further convention is worth noting: the position of the initials. A club written as “Town FC” places the football club suffix after the place name, while a handful of clubs use the prefix form instead, which came into English football much later and was usually adopted to secure a particular position in an alphabetical list or to signal a break with a predecessor club. It looks like a small distinction and it is usually the result of a very specific piece of club history.
What the names tell you about the period
Taken together, the naming conventions describe a very specific moment: an industrial country with a half-day holiday, strong church attendance, a culture of self-organised clubs and societies, and no distinction yet between amateur and professional sport.
Clubs were formed by churches, workplaces, cricket teams, pubs, schools and groups of friends, and the names recorded which. Within thirty years most of them were professional businesses with little connection to those origins, but the names stayed, and that is why an English football league table reads like a document from the eighteen-eighties. It is, more or less.
Frequently asked questions
What does “United” mean in a club’s name?
It almost always records a merger or amalgamation of two earlier clubs, or a reformation that combined with another side.
Why is it called Sheffield Wednesday?
The club grew out of a cricket club that played on Wednesdays, the local half-day holiday, and which formed a football section so members could play through the winter.
What do Rovers and Wanderers mean?
Both describe a club with no ground of its own, which played wherever a pitch could be arranged. Many kept the name long after settling permanently.
Can a club change its name?
Only with the approval of the governing bodies, and in practice only with the acceptance of its supporters. Attempts to rebrand established clubs have almost always been defeated. The object they played with has changed far more than their names have, as how the football itself has changed describes.
